“Chocolat” is a beguiling fairy tale for adults, a classic screwball comedy with barnstorming live music in the style of Django Reinhardt. It is the story of a young, single mother who opens a pâtisserie – a small temple to the finest of chocolates – in the church square of a small village in southern France. For the village priest, this is a type of “temptation” that is absolutely unacceptable. He strictly forbids the members of his congregation to have any dealings with the young woman and becomes her greatest adversary.

Two ways of life that could not be more dissimilar collide in an extremely amusing way. On the one side is the rejection of everything that is unfamiliar. On the other is openness and enjoyment.

The story is told by a virtuoso quartet surrounding the accordion player Valentin Butt and the violinist Roland Satterwhite and performed by the spellbinding acting couple Ann-Kathrin Kramer and Harald Krassnitzer. She has been part of the crème-de-la-crème of German actors for more than 20 years while he has played the role of the wonderful Viennese “Tatort” inspector for many years. The curmudgeon and the charming temptress – two figures that are virtually tailor-made for the two winsome actors. And it is a home fixture for both of the actors who live in Wuppertal. This is a fascinating mixture of play, reading and concert.
